Why Screen-Free Cameras Are Making a Comeback

Oct 29, 2026  ·  NEWS & STORIES

Old-school shape. New way to shoot.

A camera design from more than 50 years ago is getting attention again in 2026. What makes taking pictures without a preview screen feel new?

What's the first thing you do after taking a photo?

For most of us, it's checking the screen. Did anyone blink? Does everyone look good? If something feels off, we take another one. It's such a familiar habit that we barely notice doing it.

But lately, a different sort of camera has been getting attention: one that doesn't let you see the picture immediately after you take it.

In a world where our phones make almost everything easier, why are people interested in a camera that asks them to wait?

A 50-Year-Old Camera Design Is Back in the Spotlight

Retro camera design inspired by the classic 110 format

Back in 1972, Kodak introduced the 110 film format, making it easier to load film into small, lightweight cameras. They were simple to carry and easy to use, whether you were traveling or taking pictures at a family gathering.

More than 50 years later, cameras inspired by that familiar shape are appearing again.

One example is the Camp Snap 110D, a digital camera that looks back to those original 110 models. Its defining feature is that you can't review the photos as soon as you've taken them.

Its first preorder batch sold out, and a second round of preorders opened on October 20, 2026.

And the interest goes beyond one product. On October 25, Digital Camera World reported that Google search interest in “110 cameras” had reached its highest level in a decade during 2026.

Search data alone can't tell us why a trend is happening. But it does suggest that an older approach to taking pictures is finding a new audience.

What Changes When You Can't Check the Photo?

A candid moment captured through photography

At first, it sounds inconvenient.

After all, you can't check whether someone blinked or whether the framing turned out the way you hoped.

Think about taking pictures with friends on a trip. With a smartphone, it's natural to gather around the screen, look at the result and try again until everyone's happy.

With a screen-free camera, you take the photo and move straight on to the next moment.

That doesn't mean a screen-free camera is better than a smartphone. If you need to capture something important, being able to check the result is genuinely useful.

It's less about replacing your phone and more about having another way to enjoy photography.

Sometimes the Imperfect Photos Become Your Favorites

Everyday moments and memories captured in photographs

Open an old family album and you'll probably find a few pictures where someone has their eyes closed, the horizon is tilted, or the focus isn't quite right.

They're the kinds of photos we might delete and retake today.

But when you look at them years later, those little imperfections can be exactly what brings the day back. Someone bursting into laughter. A funny detail in the background that no one noticed at the time.

That's part of the appeal of a screen-free camera: discovering those moments later.

When you transfer your pictures and see them for the first time, you might notice a face, a gesture or a view that you missed while taking the photo.

Not every picture needs to be perfect.

There's More Than One Way to Enjoy a Photograph

The renewed interest in 110-inspired cameras doesn't mean everyone is ready to put away their smartphones.

It simply reminds us that convenience isn't the only thing that makes photography enjoyable.

Next time you're out with friends, try taking a few pictures without checking them right away.

Look through them later. And if one makes you smile, maybe print it and keep it close.

Sometimes, not knowing how a picture turned out is part of the fun.

Take the Photo. Keep the Memory.
